Cultivar: Yabukita
A profound umami echoing light through an ancient temple.
The Standard of a Century
Yabukita is not merely a cultivar. It is the definition of Japanese tea.
Covering roughly 70% of Japan's tea fields, Yabukita is the variety that shaped the flavour the entire nation recognises as "Japanese tea." Its origin is a story of one man's conviction: in the Meiji era, a private breeder named Hikosaburo Sugiyama cleared a bamboo thicket on its north side, found a single superior seedling — and from that one plant, a century-long standard was born.
A chance discovery that became an absolute reference point. That is Yabukita.
In the Cup
The balance is immediate and unmistakable — umami, astringency, and a gentle bitterness in a proportion so precise it has been called a 'golden ratio.'
The aroma is bold: floral, almost orchid-like, with a confident warmth running through it. Where other cultivars whisper, Yabukita speaks clearly. Not loudly — but with the authority of something that has defined taste for over a hundred years.
As a Wa-kocha, this confidence translates into a layered depth that reveals itself slowly, rewarding each sip with a new dimension.
Why This One
Every tea drinker in Japan already knows Yabukita — even if they have never heard the name. It is the invisible standard against which all others are measured.
We chose it as No. 02 because withTea is not a rejection of convention. It is convention, elevated. Yabukita proves that the most universal flavour, when processed with eight centuries of green tea precision and transformed into black tea, becomes something the world has never tasted.
The familiar, made extraordinary. That is the role of 陽 in our collection.
